Hurricane the Boxer

Why in the world would you have that poor puppy's ears cut off? He was sooo much cuter with all of his ears.

I agree about the ears. We've kept boxers for over 20 years now - and never once put them through that. He's a lovely boy - without the pointy ears! (hint - we don't dock their tails, either. Boxers have a wonderful tail)

AWWWW there is no need to crop the ears. This boxer looks just like our Cairo and she has her ears and they are BEAUTIFUL! Why would you do something so painful?

i agree with little-one. i have a boxer and he is so cute. but my dog is a mix so he dosen't look like that and that makes hurricane even cuter!

that dog is my friends dog and I think he's cute no matter what they do with his ears. Its almost the same as takeing a cat in to get fixed but no one ever complanes about that. I know that dogs get fixed too but still they put them to sleep for any surgery and it gets better, its not like they are in pain forever.

Cropping ears and tails is "almost the same" as spaying/neutering? Riiiight. Please do a leetle research into the two procedures before you make a statement like that.

Even the AKC doesn't require Boxers to be cropped.

In recent years it has become less and less common to crop the ears of Boxers, and is not required by either the AKC or ABC, however, according the breed standards of both An undocked tail should be severely penalized. So, humane or not, those are the breaks guys.

Now, mind you, I have a boxer and his tail and ears are both docked. Aside from itching for about 4 days, he did not even notice, it was a surgical procedure and there are no scars. Pain was not an issue.

Ahem, Evil? I think not. It is nothing more or less than cosmetic surgery, and as such is at the discretion of the owner.

hey its sarah again, I agree tobias queen. Hurricane didn't go through pain and you guys need to be nicer before you go and write bad things about peoples dogs, how would u feel if someone did that to your dog. Get over it.

How would you know if pain is an issue or not, since you are not the one that went through the procedure. I guarantee you that if you were to go through a major surgical procedure, you would feel some pain, regardless of the pain killers the dr. would prescribe. Dogs have a higher tolerance for pain, which mean just because they are in pain, they are less likely to show it than a human. That being said, Hurricane is cute, but much cuter before the procedure

Scrolling through the comments made on this page surprised me in that so many people who have written comments are attacking the character of the owners, not just making casual comments. Hurricane is a beautiful animal regardless of whether his ears and tail are cropped or not. Considering that none of us have any concept of the amount of pain involved, perhaps pain level is not an appropriate argument to be made at this point. All that really matters is that the dog is loved, which judging by his apparent health, i'd assume he is. For the record, I am a boxer owner and her ears are not cropped.

Having their ears 'cropped' does not make them look evil, as Claire writes. It is a matter of preference by the owner. My suggestion is to remember the classic saying...'those who live in glass houses, should not throw stones.' Claire, why not take care of the dogs in your country, and not worry about this one boxer who is lucky enough to be owned by boxer lovers, as the age of their last dog proves it. Boxers lives are roughly 7-8 yrs and they usually die of a tumor (cancer) of the brain, so get over the tail and ear thing.

I plan to get a boxer in the near future and I can say I would never crop their ears. I personally think it looks rediculous and I believe it is inhumane to go and cut a cute lil pups ears off. But unfortuately some people think that this "cosmetic surgery" is acceptable behavior. I would NOT compare getting a dog fixed to cutting its ears off. One is controling the pet population to prevent unwanted animals from dying. The other is so the own thinks their dog looks prettier. And as everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I think it is rather rude to point fingers at someone who was just stating how they feel. You can disagree with what a person is saying with out being an ass...

Hasn't this wonderful boxer lived through enough? A hurricand and all why would you put your pup through any more trauma?

I work in a veterinary hospital and I only stumbled across this site while trying to give my friend a comparison between cropped an uncropped ears (in order to explain the difference). Upon reading these comments I'd like to clarify a few things:
1. Spaying and neutering a dog and cat prolongs their life and prevents them from adding to the already insane overpopulation. The risk for breast and testicular cancer virtually disappears, as do other risks like pyometra.
2. Cropping is, in my opinion, unnecessary. It began as a way to prevent injuries to hunting dogs overseas. By the way, it's also banned in Europe now. It's a status symbol, and serves no real purpose. It's also a myth that tail docking "prevents the tail from breaking in breeds that wag too hard". Both surgeries are cosmetic, that is all. Yes, cosmetic preferences vary person to person - but a *person* can choos to undergo surgery, a dog has no choice. For the record, my hospital will tail dock if the puppy is less than week old, but it will never crop ears. Not because of a company-wide policy, but simply because our veterinarians are not comfortable with it.
3. I applaud *any* owner willing, and able, to seek veterinary care for their dog. This was not a backyard job, they paid decent money to get it done "right" so to speak. I also believe that the fact that these owners have added their puppy to a website is a gesture worthy enough to show their love. I may not agree with their choices but I also know that there are much *MUCH* worse things out there.
My point is - pick your battles. I hate ear cropping, and I feel the topic is worthy or debate; however, do not condemn the do-er, simply discuss the action. Its not an act of cruelty, just one either based out of a lack or information, or indifference to it.
Hurricaine looks like a beautiful boy, may you all enjoy a wonderful life together.

I have my own opinion as do others, I do think that he was cute before the ears was docked, but he also looks more sophisticated now that they are docked. It doesn't matter either way, if you're a true dog lover like myself, you're gonna love him either way no-matter what you choose.

I think everyone is over-reacting. If she had not posted a picture of Hurricane in bandages, I don't think this would have been such a big deal. I do not agree with the ear cropping but like others have said, she loves her dog. Just take a minute and step back. Imagine that you put a picture of your dog on a website to see all the cute comments people wrote but instead you just get bashed. That is horrible. How about let's all leave positive comments from here out. Show Hurricane some L-O-V-E!!!

I can tell you from experience dealing with the debate on ear cropping that although everyone is entitled to their opinion, this owner is entilted to his. I have debated this over and over again as boxer owner (with no crop) and feel it is TOTALLY the owners preference. I also have found that most people that want to debate this subject do not even own a boxer...and many times not even dog...true lovers of the breed huh??? this dog is loved and I am sure is doing just fine.

I know all about the ear thing,,, I always have my Dobermans ears done because I think the dogs look way better with their ears done. I know it can be allot of work but it's really worth it in the long run.

We have a boxer too!!! we LOVE huricane he is the BEST!!!!

I have two femals the oldest 3 yrs no docked, ear infections all the time she is in vets office every other or two months for ear infections which is painfull. Our other girl has ears done NO ear infections ever, she is 2. Not only do the dogs look more sophisticated they have LESS painful ear infections.

Our family has had boxers for the last 55 years, some with docked ears and some not. I have definitely found that those with docked ears got many fewer ear infections. We are true boxer lovers. Our most recent boy, Rufus is from boxer rescue and the best of the bunch. His ears are not docked and so far, no problems with infection, however, they stand our like the "Flying Nun"! With so many being bred now and so many in rescues (possibly due to their exhuberant nature)
we should all be glad that this wonderful boy has a loving home.

Ears, schmears, He's a great beast and you love him and he loves you. Had my boxer for 18 years-ears never bothered me-the flatulence, however! James Herriot's story about Cedric, the boxer, is a must read for all boxer owners and lovers. For that matter anyone who would like a doggy laugh. Hurricane is a magnificent example of a Boxer. Love the name, now that Dylan song is stuck in my head. I'm hoping there will be no more big storms for you and you can really enjoy this Hurricane.

goodness! A lot of hostility from 'passive' people. While I personally would not have the ears or tail done I think it is up to the owner-- I certainly know a lot of boxer and doberman onwers that do have it done but the simply adore and spoil their dogs. This dog is certainly seems loved and cared for by the owner and isn't that what counts. Never will we all agree on this or how to raise children either-- but I think the love is what counts most

You have a very beautiful boxer. I have always had boxers ever since I was in my early teens and I couldn't imagine having anyother kind of dog. I always have 2 at a time. I do disagree with the cropping the ears. It is very mainful for the pet and having the ears cropped is just for looks. I think people who want to get their pets ears cropped should watch a video on how it is done and then maybe they won't want the ears done. I do agree with the tail being docked I have seen boxers, rottiwellers with tails and they don't right with tails I personally love the nubs. I work at a veterinary clinic and we stopped the ear cropping and we do the tail docking. I think boxers look very cute with their ears natural. So if you ever decide to get another one I would recommand on keeping the ears natural.

Wow! Reading these comments, I just had to sign up & have my say. While I did have my first Boxer's ears cropped, I have since had a change of heart. My current Boxer has floppy ears & my future one's will too. But cropping a dog's ears does not make a bad owner & Hurricane's owners should not be treated as such. I work for the Humane Society in our city and I have seen what bad owners are like. People who leave their dogs tied outside 24/7 are bad owners. Bad owners don't train their dogs, don't socialize their dogs, don't give their dogs heartworm preventative or routine vet care. They don't buy their dogs presents & take them on vacation with the family. In short, if you do not think of your dog as a member of your family, you probably shouldn't have a dog. I usually just look at the pictures on this site, but today I clicked on Boxers (my favorite breed) and couldn't believe some of the comments I read directed at Hurricane's family. Comments that I think should be reserved for people who neglect or abuse their dogs. Those of you who are so eager to condemn someone for ear cropping should volunteer at your local shelter. You'll soon realize what a lucky pup Hurricane is. Things are so much worse out there for dogs & cats.

I just want to know to everyone who does "cosmetic surgery" on an animal, would you do that to your kid if they didn't need it? You really have no idea how much pain your animal is in. I would never do that to any pet of mine, but that is just my opinion. Hurricane is a beautiful dog either way and he is obviously cared for and that is all that anyone could ask for.

You shouldnt slice off that poor dogs ears. How would you like it if someone did that to you?! A dog looks so much more attractive when it has all of its ears intact. Boxers are gorgous dogs, treat them right.

Wow, I cannot believe you people are being so self rightous over this. Yes you are entitled to an opinion, but not to judge those you do not know. As well, people are attracted to certain breeds for the way they look and until recently the tail and ear docking has been standard so many people are attracted to that look and choose that breed to look that way. There are far more horendous things happening to unloved pets and people in each of your backyards. Perhaps attacking those villains would be a a more humane act.
